Developed through the legacy of the Durham 2025 UK City of Culture bid, and co founded by Third Version Creative, Ensemble 84 builds on that ambition by establishing long-term cultural infrastructure and opportunity in the region. Inspired by South Africa’s Isango Ensemble, the company adapts this model for the North East - combining world-class performance with deep local engagement. Horden, shaped by its mining history and decades of economic change, sits at the centre of the work. Ensemble 84 actively challenges narratives of decline, placing the town firmly back on the cultural map through bold, community-driven theatre. At the core of Ensemble 84 is a model that integrates professional theatre-making with paid, open-access training. An initial call-out attracted over 1,000 applicants from across County Durham, with selected participants undertaking a paid training programme before moving directly into production.

Working at the Real Living Wage, participants develop performance and production skills while collaborating with leading artists. This approach removes financial barriers and ensures that local residents are not simply audiences, but active collaborators in the creation of ambitious new work.

Mother Courage and Her Children (2025), directed by Mark Dornford-May and translated by Lee Hall, marked the company’s debut. Combining local performers with international practice, the production offered a powerful and musically driven interpretation of Brecht’s anti-war classic. It received national critical attention and sold out its runs in Horden before transferring to Live Theatre, Newcastle.

Pits, People and Players (2025) turned its focus inward, drawing on the histories and identities of Horden itself. Built from local stories and lived experience, the production created a collective portrait of the town - exploring its mining heritage while reflecting on its present and future.

In 2026, presented again as a revival of the 2025 hit show exploring the history of Horden from the rise of the colliery and its place at the heart of Britain’s industrial story, to the lasting impact of the pit closures in 1987. Created with an all County Durham cast and shaped through local research and testimony, the piece is rooted in the lived experience of the community. Blending theatre, storytelling and music, it reflects on identity, change and what hope can look like for the future of Horden.

Fierce immediacy. Energetic and engaging celebration of Horden’s history.

11-13th June, The Playhouse, Horden

Ensemble 84 launched an exciting new chapter with the opening of The Playhouse in Horden - a dedicated performance space rooted in County Durham and designed to support bold, community-driven work. Alongside this, they present The Tragicall Historie of Hamlet (First Quarto), a rarely performed, shorter version of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Directed by Mark Dornford-May and performed by an all-County Durham cast, the production brings a fresh perspective to the familiar story through a dynamic blend of live music, song and movement. Together, the new venue and production mark a significant step in Ensemble 84’s ongoing commitment to locally rooted, internationally resonant theatre.

May 26th – June 6th, 2026: The Playhouse, Horden, County Durham

The Playhouse, Horden

Ensemble 84 has established a permanent home in Horden through the transformation of a former Catholic church into The Playhouse. This new venue provides a dedicated space for performance, rehearsal and community activity, addressing a longstanding gap in local cultural infrastructure.

More than a theatre, The Playhouse is a civic space - supporting year-round engagement, training and creative activity. It enables the company to sustain its work locally while continuing to develop productions of national significance.

Ensemble 84’s work is grounded in the belief that access to culture is a matter of social justice. By creating theatre in and with the community, the company expands participation, builds confidence and challenges perceptions of where ambitious cultural work can take place.

Ensemble 84 is part of Into the Light, and supported by Durham County Council and Arts Council England.
